The benefits of North American Cedar Window Shutters

The native people of the Pacific Coast prized their Cedar Wood for its long lasting qualities and used it for most of their building needs. Evidence of Cedar’s durability are the many cedar artifacts still in good condition today.
Shutters made from the low quality timbers can be cheaper than the high quality North American cedar wood. However inferior wood can easily be damaged, and is likely to twist, warp or shrink.
So what’s so great about shutters made from North American Cedar timber?
Cedar Wood grows in the Pacific Northwest of America where the weather is damp, and where fungus, micro-organisms and insects subject trees to destructive conditions. Due do this hostile environment, Cedar trees have developed self-protective qualities. These natural protective qualities make Cedar Wood perfect for rooms in the home where humidity and variable temperature – which causes cracking – are a common problem.
Dimensional Stability
North American Cedar Wood will absorb or discharge moisture to attain equilibrium with the surrounding atmosphere. But unlike other timbers, Cedar Wood has very low shrinkage, and is superior to many other coniferous woods in its resistance to warping, twisting and shrinking. The high stability of the Cedar Wood makes Appeal’s range of bespoke shutters suitable for any shape or size window – curved, triangle, circles…virtually any shape is possible meaning that almost any window can have any Appeal Shutter fitted!
Thermal Conductivity
Wood is an excellent thermal insulator, helping keep a building cool in the summer whilst reducing heating costs in the winter. Woods with low density such as North American Cedar Wood, have some of the highest thermal insulating values.
Acoustic Properties
Wood has better ability to absorb and therefore dampen vibrations than most structural materials. This is an important acoustical property and North American Cedar Wood is particularly effective in this regard so Appeal’s shutters that are made from Cedar are excellent at reducing noise or confining it to certain areas in the home.
