do humans take in carbon?
i’m doing a report on how gas masks have improved. Katherine Blodgett improved the gas mask because she realized that many of the poisonous gases that the troops wish to be protected against can be absorbed by carbon molecules.the gas was still getting in some how. does this mean we breathe in carbon? please explain i have to do an oral report about this

Our carbon intake is through oils, carbohydrates and proteins not carbon dioxide gas.
The gas masks failed because:-
a) an effective seal needs to be maintained around the skin. Dirt and water will break this seal, as will whiskers (which is why the modern soldier is always clean shaven nowadays). In trenches keeping clean is a problem (all the mud and dust etc) shaving is a problem (lack of a water supply) and the mask itself may become contaminated with dirt etc.
b) the second reason that masks fail is because the carbon (actually a charcoal filter) gets used up and stops working. It then has to be replaced, which means taking it off and (possibly) dying. Even under ideal conditions ALL gas masks will eventually fail because of this.
