LED power savings vs regular bulbs
Lighting – we need it. We use it at night so that we can continue doing things and are not limited to daylight hours. We use lighting so that we do not have to sit next to a window to get work done. Lighting opens up areas that would be too dark in which to go about daily work. The common method of lighting has been with incandescent bulbs with fluorescent bulbs gaining ground.
Incandescent bulbs generate a lot of heat when in use, last 1500 hours, and use a great deal of electricity over their life span. The heat produced in a home increases the air conditioning costs during the hot months. Spotlights used by stages create a great deal of heat for the actors. Art galleries have to protect against heat damage of the paintings and other works of art. Plants need to be watered more in greenhouses because of increased evaporation.
Fluorescent bulbs use less power, are cooler, and last longer but they use ballasts that need to be replaced periodically as well as the bulb. And fluorescent bulbs contain mercury which makes them difficult to throw out when they die.
The next generation of lighting has arrived – LED lighting. LED lights are no longer limited to toys and electronic equipment. They can now be used for lighting. LED lights have now been re-engineered to be more practical albeit still expensive. LED light bulbs use less electricity – 3W compared to the 45W of an incandescent bulb, last longer – 60,000 hours compared to 1,500 hours, and do not produce the heat of incandescent bulbs. But does the LED power savings vs. regular bulbs make the lighting more economical over the long-term even though LED bulbs are more expensive initially? What are the LED power savings vs. regular bulbs?
When LED bulbs are used, there is far less heat build-up. Houses would not be so hard to cool off during summer months. The decrease in heat build-up makes them ideal for use as growth lights – less watering of the plants; art galleries – less damage to paintings due to heat; stage lighting – less heat for the actors and props.
The LED power savings vs. regular bulbs also means that solar panels would be able to better handle the power needs of a house making it more practical to use solar panels. 3W per bulb compared to 45W per bulb amounts to a large decrease in energy use.
There is no filament in an LED bulb making it far less fragile. As for comparing LED bulbs to fluorescent – LED bulbs still last longer, use less power, and, what could be considered the most important, do not contain mercury.
So what about the LED power savings vs. regular bulbs? LED bulbs reduce the electricity used to light and the electricity used to cool a room from the heat created by the bulb. LED lighting seems to be the best thing to happen to lighting since the light bulb replaced the torch.
