How To Maintain Cold Air Inside A Refrigerator
Are you concerned with the recent increase in your electricity bill? It probably means you are consuming more energy than usual. One of the biggest energy hogs in your home is the refrigerator.
While most refrigerators are energy efficient, you might be unconsciously doing something to increase energy consumption. When cold air escapes the fridge interior, the machine will work harder in maintaining the cold temperature. As a result, it will consume more energy to make this possible.
You should ensure that cold air will not escape from inside the fridge all the time. Here are a few tips on how to do that:
1. Avoid frequently opening your fridge for a prolonged period of time. Strategically arrange the contents of your fridge in such a way that the things you are going to need earlier that week are easily accessible.
Store food in transparent containers so you don’t have to rummage inside and check the contents of containers for the one you are looking for. This will save you more time.
2. Check the rubber gasket of the fridge. Make sure that it will really seal the fridge perfectly. Old rubber gaskets can be unreliable. To check the seal of the gasket, try using a flashlight. Turn on an LED flashlight inside the machine and close the refrigerator door. If light can be seen through the gasket, it means air can escape from inside the machine.
3. Install an alarm system if your fridge does not have this feature. If you have kids at home, the alarm system will alert you if the refrigerator has been left open for a prolonged period of time. This will prevent the kids from playing with this machine all the time.
4. Do not store hot or warm food. Let it cool down first before storing it in your fridge. This might not cause cold air to escape from the fridge but this will increase temperature inside. Because of that, the machine will consume more energy to lower down the temperature.
5. Clean the coils at the back of the fridge regularly. Collected dust and cobwebs might block the exhaust coils and prevent hot air from being released from the machine. This will help regulate temperature inside. You can use a shop vacuum to get rid of debris from the coils. It is advisable to clean the coils semi-annually.
These simple tips can help you maintain the efficiency of your refrigerator. Maintaining the right interior temperature of your refrigerator can also prolong the reliable functions of this appliance.
