What is the Difference Between Microdermabrasion and a Chemical Peel?
Microdermabrasion is a process by which dead skin cells are sloughed and the skin is rejuvenated and renewed and is shinier and silkier that it was before. It is basically revealing new skin. The crystals used are aluminum oxide or diamond particles and the work is done at home, by a dermatologist in the office or at a spa by a professional.
A chemical peel, on the other hand, comes in categories: light, medium and deep. All three of these categories have one thing in common and that is that the do remove the top layer of skin. The light peel is a low risk with a slight pink skin which fades very fast. There is no recovery period with a light peel. There are home peel kits available from companies like Avon and Neutrogena at a very affordable price. It is advised that the home kit can be used for a light peel just to see how the skin will react to a professional light peel.
The medium peel is the same only it peels to another level and can cause some swelling that can last from seven to ten days. It not only takes care of lighter wrinkles but is handles the deeper ones too leaving a noticeably improved skin. The effects of the medium peel can last up to one to two years.
The deep peel is a very serous medical procedure. The patient undergoing a deep peel is sedated and the procedure is done in the hospital on an inpatient basis. This process removes many layers of skin and the recovery time is extensive. The skin becomes very pink and the pinkness takes six months to fade. This procedure can last up to twenty years. This procedure will not allow the skin to tan and must be performed by a qualified physician. Because of the seriousness of this procedure it is recommended that the patient pick a doctor that has performed many such procedures.
It is suggested that if you want to change the way your skin looks, the peel is what should be done. The decision should depend on how badly the skin is damaged and that will have to be reversed. Will you be able to complete the recovery time? The cost should be taken in to account as it can be in the thousands.
As a last resort, remember that microdermabrasion is not an appearance changer although; it does enhance the appearance of the skin.
