Use Deep Dish Pie Plates to Make Filling Pies
Pies are a part of the everyday diet for some people and there are many different types to choose from. The main course can be meat, cheese or vegetable based while for dessert there is a wide range of fruit pies. It is possible to make a pie in any sort of dish but for a pie with a full filling you will need to use deep dish pie plates. Most examples are 1″ to 1 ½” but a deep one can be 2″ deep or more.
Some of these appliances will not cost a great deal more than the normal ones, but some at the top end of the scale can cost over $130. One that fits into this category is the DII Tuscan Blue 3-Quart Ceramic Stoneware Deep Dish Pie Plate made by Design Imports. As well as the dish, there is a metal stand so as there will not be any damage to the worktops when the pie is removed from the oven. They do not all have to be this expensive. Ten dollars can buy you a basic metal dish.
Depending on taste, you may find that there is not much difference, but with a metal dish, there are a number of disadvantages. A knife could damage it when the pie is being cut, and depending on the type of fruit used, the acid can damage the metal if it is left on. There is one type of pie that this dish is ideal for – the bottomless one. The name does not just refer to the fact that there is plenty for everyone, but also means one that does not have a layer of pastry on the bottom.
With this type once you have cut the pastry at the top, there is no need for a knife to be used to the bottom so no damage will be inflicted on the base of the dish. They are ideal if you want to make a pie that is not only going to fill up the diners but has plenty of fillings in it. It is easy to make a pie that is all pastry and no fruit with ordinary 1″ thick plates, but with deep dish pie plates you can be much more extravagant.
When a dish is this deep it is important to make sure that the filling is fully cooked. With more shallow ones it is easy for the filling to cook quickly but once the pie dish is more than 2″ deep there has to be a happy medium between making sure the pastry does not burn but the inside is ready. Although it may seem that the pie made in a deep dish pie plates will cost much more than a pie made in a smaller dish this is not always the case. It may be possible to make one big one rather than having to do a couple of smaller ones. This way you are saving both time and money while still serving good food.
