The Basics of Installing a Pedestal Sink

A pedestal sink is a great way to add style and grace to a bathroom that doesn’t have a lot of space. These sinks not only look great, but if you can find one that has a larger ledge, you can also use it to keep your toiletries and save plenty of room. So if you find that you just don’t have as much room in your bathroom as you’d like, a pedestal sink may be exactly what you need.

Installing a new pedestal sink is fairly simple if you have a preexisting sink you want to replace. All you have to do is take out the old sink and attach the new pedestal sink to the plumbing. The only thing is, normal sinks usually do a good job of hiding the pipes and plumbing within their constraints. A pedestal sink is smaller and all of the plumbing and pipes under the sink will be visible and exposed. So if your pipes are rusty and unattractive, you may want to consider replacing these before you install the new sink.

If you are looking to save money and just don’t have enough to replace all of the pipes and stll install a new sink, you can always work on cleaning them up a bit. Use a sander and some chemicals to get rid of the rust and then you can simply use a primer and paint to make it appear as new.

The first thing you need to do of course is to remove the old sink. Unhook all of the pipes and plumbing and then you will be left with nothing but the pipes and the wall behind the old sink.

Next you will need to measure where on the wall or floor the pipes are located. Write down exactly where they are at so that you can buy a pedestal sink to match up with your current plumbing. Doing this backwards by moving the plumbing to match the sink is going to require a great amount of more work and money.

Each pedestal sink is going to have different instructions on how to install it correctly. Some sinks set on the base of your floor while others are screwed into the wall or are secured by both.

Installing the new sink will require you to complete various tasks. First you will need to attach the drain and pivot rod for controlling the drain. Then you will need to mount the new sink to the wall and secure it. The rest will involve putting the P-trap in and connecting the rest of the plumbing.

It’s a fairly simple task but one that involves following the specific instructions carefully. If you don’t feel up to the task, by all means get a professional to help you.
