Outdoor Kitchens Are Sizzling “Haute”
If you can’t stand the heat, take the kitchen outside.
When winter releases its grip on our frozen North Eastern souls, we long to fling the doors open and spend time outside to make the most of the fleeting months of balmy breezes.
In recent years, ever increasing real estate prices and property taxes have made people re-consider moving. Rising mortgage rates and families with children who don’t want to move away from established neighborhood networks are also fueling the home renovation industry as people increase their investment in their current dwellings. It has become commonplace to drive down almost any residential street in the city and see at least one or two dumpsters parked in driveways as the calling card of a major renovation. Most of the time, the happy by-product of home improvement is enhanced quality of life and increased property value.
The same circumstances are inspiring homeowners to take their residential upgrades outside. Rather than buying a vacation property, many people are opting to install recreational facilities at home to avoid the financial burden of a second mortgage, maintenance costs, and more property taxes. The weekly battle with cottage-bound traffic holds little appeal for many people who would rather spend the numerous, wasted travel hours relaxing in their garden at home.
It is this mindset that makes the concept of an outdoor kitchen more appealing and attainable. Even so, most people don’t start out thinking that they’re going to install an out door kitchen. Within the context of landscaping the garden, homeowners are looking for ways to create an inviting, comfortable atmosphere to relax and entertain. Usually, an outdoor kitchen evolves out of the clients asking for some storage and landing space near the BBQ. The wings on a typical BBQ don’t provide enough room for a glass of wine, platter of food, condiments and tools, so we’re increasingly aware of the need for interesting solutions when designing decks and patios.
Beyond the grill
Although outdoor cooking is often still a simple free standing BBQ, the addition of an adjacent portable storage and beverage cart nestled against the back wall of the home can start to move it toward a kitchen experience. But as more and more people search for ways to enhance the appeal of weekend living at home, pergolas, gazebos, lanais, covered porches, summer houses, pool houses… all can play host to the outdoor kitchen.
Depending on the budget, there are an astonishing range of built-in specialty appliances which make the outdoor cooking experience worthy of the foodiest gourmet. They can include: a grill with infrared burner and smoker option, available in widths from 27″ to 53″; separate side burner, wok burner and infrared griller; smoker oven, gas wall oven and warming drawer ( also great for keeping the towels toasty near the pool); ice maker, beer keg, refrigerator, refreshment cart and sink with faucet; and cabinets with a variety of storage options.
Material Matters
Since Northern climates can dish out extremes in temperature, materials for cabinets and work surfaces must necessarily be able to withstand a pot-luck mix of weather conditions. Several manufacturers of high-end outdoor cooking equipment such as Dacor, Wolf, Kitchen Aid and Viking have stainless steel storage cabinets for built in applications or grill carts with extra storage beneath to keep a variety of equipment close at hand. Other options are stainless steel doors that can be framed into a masonary or stucco structure to provide access to areas underneath built-in grills to facilitate gas or propane hookups. Viking’s line of heavy-duty, outdoor stainless steel cabinets are made with commercial–type construction using marine grade starboard material. Since fervent devotees of outdoor grilling will even brave nasty weather in pursuit of the perfectly seared steak, modern outdoor appliances in a built-in application don’t have to be uninstalled and stored inside for the winter but only need to be covered to protect them from the elements when not in use. Any electrical appliances however, should be unplugged and have their water lines drained before the thermometer plunges below freezing.
Like indoor kitchens, the array of counter top materials to choose from is dizzying. Typically, in an outdoor kitchen, the surfaces are less apt to be used for actual preparation and more as landing spots for platters of ingredients and barware. Therefore, materials are still practical if they are more rustic. Honed granite, stainless steel, slate slab or tile, engineered stone like terrazzo, solid surface materials, ceramic tile, even brick or flat field stone are all potential choices for counter tops. However, similar to their indoor counterparts, any kind of tile, stone pieces or brick will require grout lines which tend to collect debris, so these materials are best used in an area which has a roof overhead to minimize falling vegetation collecting in the grooves.
Since most successful entertaining occurs in the kitchen, this summer, tell your guests to take it outside.
