History of wind power – 20th century at US development

From 1974 until the middle of the 1980′s the U.S. government dealt with industry to invest in the technology and enable massive commercial wind turbines. The NASA wind turbines were developed under a plan to produce a utility-scale wind turbine industry in the United States With financial support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and later the US Department of Energy (DOE), an amount of 13 experimental wind turbines were put into operation, in 4 major wind turbine concepts. This research and development program initiated a lot of the multi-megawatt turbine technologies applied these days, that includes : steel tube towers, variable-speed generators, composite blade materials, partial-span pitch control, as well as aerodynamic, structural, and acoustic engineering design potentialities. The massive wind turbines developed under this effort put a number of world records for diameter and power output. The MOD-2 wind turbine cluster of three turbines made 7.5 megawatts of power in 1981. In 1987, the MOD-5B was the biggest single wind turbine operating in the world with a rotor coil diameter of about 100 metres and a valued power of 3.2 megawatts. It presented an availability of 95 percentage, an unequaled grade for a new first-unit wind turbine. The MOD-5B had the 1st large scale variable velocity drive train and a sectioned, two-blade rotor coil that enabled simple transport of the blades. The 4 megawatt WTS-4 had got the world record for power output for over 20 yrs. Eventhough the later models were traded commercially, none of these two-bladed units were ever put into mass production. When crude oil prices worsened by a factor of three from 1980 until the early 1990′s, a lot of turbine companies, both large an small, left the business. The commercial trades of the NASA Boeing Mod-5B, for instance, came to an end in 1987 when Boeing Engineering and Construction exclaimed they were “planning to leave the business because very low crude oil prices are holding windmills for electricity generation wasteful.”

Later, in the 1980s, California offered tax incentives for wind power. These incentives funded the initial major use of wind power for utility electrical energy. These machines, gathered in large wind parks like at Altamont Pass would be thought small and un-economic by modern wind power development measures.

Self sufficiency and “back to the land”

In the 1970s, a lot of people started to desire a self sufficient way of living. Photovoltaic cell were too costly for small scale electrical generation, so some turned to wind generators. At first they constructed ad-hoc styles using wood and car parts. Most people found that a reliable wind generator is a fairly complex engineering task, well beyond the ability of most romantics. Some commenced to look for and reconstruct farm wind generators from the 1930s, of which Jacobs Wind Electric Company machines were specially sought after. Hundreds of Jacobs products were renovated and traded during the 1970s.

All major horizontal axis wind turbines nowadays spin the same way (clockwise) to give a coherent view. Nonetheless, early wind turbines rotated counter-clockwise like the old windmills, but a displacement occurred from 1978 and on. The individualist-minded blade supplier Økær had the decision to modify direction as a way to be distinguished from the collective Tvind and their small wind turbines. A lot of of the blade clients were companies that later evolved into Vestas, Siemens, Enercon and Nordex. Public demand needed that all wind turbines spin the same way, and the success of these companies made clockwise the new standard.

Following experience with renewed 1930s wind turbines, a new generation of American companies commenced constructing and trading small wind turbines not only for battery-charging but also for interconnection to electrical energy networks. An early model would be Enertech Corporation of Norwich, Vermont, which started constructing 1.8 kW models in the early 1980s.

In the 1990s, as esthetics and durability went more crucial, wind turbines were positioned atop tubular steel or reinforced concrete towers. Small generators are attached to the tower on the ground, then the tower is raised into position. Bigger generators are hoisted into position atop the tower and there is a ladder or staircase inside the tower to let technical engineers to access and maintain the generator, while secured from the weather condition.
