PAINFUL STIFF JOINTS – How to Deal with Them
Cold weather and the aging process can cause your joints to become stiff and painful. Unfortunately, you can’t stop the aging process, and unless you’re considering a move to the south, the cold is inevitable for at least four months of the year. However, understanding what causes the pain and stiffness will help you deal with the problem.
As the joints of the body begin to age; the fluids within the joint (synovial fluid) changes in its viscosity. It becomes denser, which makes it a less effective lubricator for the joint. At the same time, the years of wear and tear on the joint causes the cartilage that covers the joint surfaces to become worn. This results in bone rubbing on bone, which can become very painful. When these two things occur, your joints begin to feel stiff and painful.
In reaction to the pain, most individuals stop moving their painful joints. This further aggravates the problem because in order for the synovial fluid to act as a lubricant, the joint must be moved through its full range. The muscles surrounding the joint become weak and, therefore, do not support the joint as best they could.
As joint surfaces wear down, certain deformities start to occur. These changes cause the joint to be at a mechanical disadvantage during movement, thus putting additional stresses through the joint structures.
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to prevent the changes that occur as a result of the ageing process. However, it’s very possible to slow down the process and to find ways of avoiding the discomfort while performing your activities.
Some things to keep in mind if you suffer from stiff, painful joints:
- Make a conscious effort to move all joints through their full range of movement on a daily basis.
- Keep the supporting muscles strong by performing moderate exercise.
- Use your large joints in order to spare your small joints, whenever possible (eg. use your shoulder to lift instead of your wrist).
- Organize your house in a way that will conserve your energy (eg. use low shelves that can be easily reached).
- Do everything you want to do, but in moderation.
- Do not put excessive weight or strain through painful joints, as this will only make them more painful.
- Take advantage of commercially available assistive devices to reduce the strain through joints. (eg. use a grip handle to make it easier to write with a pen).
- The use of ice, heat and physical therapy techniques can greatly help to reduce pain and inflammation when used appropriately.
These are just a few helpful hints to help control or avoid stiff, painful joints. If you suffer from these symptoms you should consult with a physiotherapist for further assessment of your condition.
