Cast iron fireplace grates has small gaps on the bottom that allows coal and wood chunks to stay on the grate for longer.This type of grate can be chosen according to how often you will use your fireplace.For rare use you can choose a light weight grate and for frequent use a heavy weight grate.A cast iron fireplace grate is durable and will last for a long time, it is the best choice in my opinion even if it is more expensive.
There are also grate heaters available in the market, these are just hollow tubes that blow hot air when heated.Grate heaters are controlled by thermostat that turns the fan off automatically once the tubing gets hot.
Fireplace grates may rust over time because there is moisture in the firebox.You could add a good chimney to keep the moisture out of the firebox.
